I was recently scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed when I noticed the hashtag ‘#AlexFromTarget.’ I was so confused about what the fuss was about. My newsfeed was filled with the same photo of a teenage boy putting groceries in a bag. How could he possibly be famous?? I did a bit of a Google and found out that there is no reason that he is famous. He’s never done anything incredibly noteworthy, he doesn’t sing or act, he’s never saved a life. He is simply famous because some teenage girl thought he was attractive and sneakily took a photo of him to put on Twitter. However, the girl apparently had thousands of twitter followers who all shared the photo and suddenly ‘Alex from Target’ became known World Wide. I also heard today that apparently this whole incident is part of a research project that is studying the way that social media works. It is said that the photo was set up in order to see how quickly it would spread across the ‘Twittersphere’ and eventually leak onto Facebook and other sites. I’m not sure the exact truth behind the whole issue, this is just what I’ve heard. I’ve also heard that Alex from Target has appeared on the Ellen show, and it has been noted that in order to make room for him on the show, they had to turn down a girl suffering from cancer. Again, I’m not sure the truth behind the whole issue, but I do know that if this is true, the world needs to sort out its priorities. Social media has overtaken our lives. This is in no way a bad thing, social media is great! We are able to access so much information instantly, we are able to keep in contact with friends and family, and we can even see what our favourite celebrities are up to! This being said, I’m sure Alex is a great guy and all, but he hasn’t done anything? Ellen was reportedly going to give the girl with cancer the opportunity to bring awareness and share her story, but instead she invited Alex onto her show to talk about his ‘rise to fame.’ Yes, this is an interesting story and there are a lot of people talking about it at the moment, but there was the chance to really change someone’s life and help them out, instead her story goes untold and a boy who everyone will forget about in a few weeks, was brought into the spotlight for doing nothing other than having his photo taken while he was unaware and bagging groceries.
